The kite runner had the theme of family
and friendship. Amir and Hassen's friendship was one of the main
parts in the development of the story. Through Amir's lack of
courage, he didn't act like a true friend. Hassen stayed loyal to
Amir throughout his entire life; he forgave Amir for what he did and
wanted to continue to be friends. Amir runs away though, creates a
great life for himself. When Hassen dies, Amir has a chance to fix
the wrong that he did, and so takes Hassen's little boy back to
America to be with his family. Hassen and Amir's friendship is like
Proverbs 18:24, “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but
there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Amir might
betray Hassen and be awful to Hassen, but Hassen never stops being
his friends and being there for Amir.
Baba's relationship with Hassen and
Amir was a big development for the story as well. Baba has high hopes
for Amir since he can't put them on Hassen. Amir feels hated by his
father and jealous of how Baba treats Hassen. Amir's life with his
father and Hassen is like Proverbs 27:10, “Do not forsake your
friend and your fathers' friend, and do not go to your brothers house
in the day of your calamity. Better is a neighbour who is near, than
a brother who is far away.” Amir forsakes Hassen, yet Amir still
takes the kite from him and With Baba, Amir must be respectful to all
of his 'father's friends'. When they move to America, Baba and Amirs
relationship becomes much better and both are much happier.
