Introduction

The kite runner had the theme of family and friendship. Amir and Hassen's friendship was one of the main parts in the development of the story. Through Amir's lack of courage, he didn't act like a true friend. Hassen stayed loyal to Amir throughout his entire life; he forgave Amir for what he did and wanted to continue to be friends. Amir runs away though, creates a great life for himself. When Hassen dies, Amir has a chance to fix the wrong that he did, and so takes Hassen's little boy back to America to be with his family. Hassen and Amir's friendship is like Proverbs 18:24, “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Amir might betray Hassen and be awful to Hassen, but Hassen never stops being his friends and being there for Amir.

Baba's relationship with Hassen and Amir was a big development for the story as well. Baba has high hopes for Amir since he can't put them on Hassen. Amir feels hated by his father and jealous of how Baba treats Hassen. Amir's life with his father and Hassen is like Proverbs 27:10, “Do not forsake your friend and your fathers' friend, and do not go to your brothers house in the day of your calamity. Better is a neighbour who is near, than a brother who is far away.” Amir forsakes Hassen, yet Amir still takes the kite from him and With Baba, Amir must be respectful to all of his 'father's friends'. When they move to America, Baba and Amirs relationship becomes much better and both are much happier.

My Idea

"Yes, Father," Hassan would mumble, looking down at his feet. But he never told on me. Never told that the mirror, like shooting walnuts at the neighbor's dog, was always my idea." (2.3)

History

But we were kids who had learned to crawl together, and no history, ethnicity, society, or religion was going to change that either. I spent most of the first twelve years of my life playing with Hassan.” (4.6)

Thousand times over

"For you a thousand times over!" he said. Then he smiled his Hassan smile” (7.54)

Father

Car

"He reached in his coat pocket and handed me a set of keys. "There," he said, pointing to the car in front of us. It was an old model Ford, long and wide, a dark color I couldn't discern in the moon light. "It needs painting, and I'll have one of the guys at the station put in new shocks, but it runs." I took the keys, stunned. I looked from him to the car.
"You'll need it to go to college," he said." (11)

Wedding

Baba spent $35,000, nearly the balance of his life savings, on the awroussi, the wedding ceremony. He rented a large Afghan banquet hail in Fremont--the man who owned it knew him from Kabul and gave him a substantial discount. Baba paid for the ??chi las, our matching wedding bands, and for the diamond ring I picked out. He bought my tuxedo, and my traditional green suit for the nika--the swearing ceremony. (13)

Reflection

I chose the theme of friendship and family because I got the biggest response to those aspects of the book; it stood out the most. The quotes I chose were clear examples of this theme. Putting the Bible quotes in and having to figure out how it goes with the story was difficult. I chose the Bible verse(s) that stood out the most, just like my theme. Both quotes were from Proverbs and talked about brothers. In the story you learn that Hassen and Amir were half-brothers. Hassen was loyal and always there for Amir; whereas Amir was embarrassed, jealous, and a horrible friend to Hassen. I realized that Baba and Amir was the family part of the theme, but I had a harder time explaining that because I was to focused on Amir and Hassen's friendship. This book made me sad, but I was really good. I couldn't get over the fact that Amir left Hassen; it was the reason I chose this theme.

The images I chose felt like they fit. They looked good with the quote and help add feeling to the quote. I really liked what I had originally done, where they were in black and white, but I couldn't get it on here.

Overall I felt that this theme was the one that I would enjoy doing the most.
